Rotary Women's Book Club

Dear Fellow Book Lovers!

Our next Women's Book Club Meeting is this Wednesday, November 4th at 6 pm.  We are reading The Paris Seamstress, a fabulous book suggested by Lynne.

Please feel free to enjoy your favorite beverage and snacks during the meeting... that's what we would be doing if we were in person!

And please give some advance thought to a few book suggestions for next month... if everyone could bring one suggestion to the meeting, that would be great!

Crutches for Costa Rica

District 5280 has a project to ship a container full of crutches, wheelchairs, and other mobility devices to Costa Rica as a part of the District Humanitarian trip next April.  The shipment will go even if the trip is cancelled due to Covid. We will ship the container in plenty of time so that the devices can be distributed as a part of the Humanitarian Trip.

Guinness World Record & Rotarian

Howard Berg! What is his story? How did he arrive to be the faster reader in the world?  A Guinness World Record Holder? Something in him must be unique… Did he have a mission? Or did life’s circumstances land him here? How does it feel to do what he does? In order to understand how someone can help and contribute to society in such an immeasurable way, you must hear him speak.

SPOOK-TAKULAR HALLOWEEN CELEBRATION!
Spooky Thursday Night Live!

Halloween Costume
Halloween is almost here and we will start early hiding behind the Zoom with the mystery of an improvised costume. Who will have the best costume from the waist up?

Pumpkin Carving
Say “Hocus Pocus” and the artist in you will shine through the illuminated face of the jack-o-lantern that you carve.

Ghoulish Drink Recipes
Will helps you get into the spirit of games, ghost stories, and contests that you won’t want to miss.

Black Cat Martini
Our opening drink is a very simple, quick concoction that is easy to make but has a great Halloween feel.
-2 oz. Blavod Black vodka
-1/2 oz. Chambord
Combine in shaker with 1 cup ice.  Shake and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Black Devil Martini
This simple but fun little number comes from the American Professional Bartending Schools of Illinois in Chicago.
-2 oz dark rum.  The darker the better.
-1/2 oz. dry Vermouth
-1 black olive
Stir, strain into a chilled cocktail glass.  Add olive on a toothpick.

The Jack O’ Lantern
This great recipe comes from Southern Hospitality in New York City.  Use a lowball glass and garnish this drink correctly to get a great tasting drink that looks like a pumpkin.
-1 oz Hennessy VSOP Cognac
-1 1/2 oz orange juice
-1/2 oz ginger ale
-1/2 oz Grand Marnier
Shake combined ingredients and strain into a lowball glass over ice.  Place an orange slice (wheel) over the top with a lime twist in the center of the wheel as a garnish topper.

Fake Blood
-1 oz. bourbon
-1/2 oz. lime juice
-Tomato juice
-1 tsp. Tequila
Pour the bourbon and lime juice in a glass over ice.  Fill remainder with tomato juice and stir.  Then add Tequila.

Rotary's Global Impact
Friday, December 18.

What better way to wrap up the year than to focus on the spirit of giving and "service above self" as exemplified by the impactful work around the world that is made possible by The Rotary Foundation?

What types of projects does The Rotary Foundation focus on?  How are our donations put to work?  Get the inside scoop from our Rotary friend, Karen Greenberg (South Bay Sunrise Rotary) who serves as Sub Chair on the District Foundation Giving Committee.

Looking forward to seeing you on Friday for our last meeting of 2020!

We'll share best wishes for the New Year!

PVP Rotary Adopts Two Switzer Learning Center Families!

Once again the generosity of our members shined this holiday season. The club adopted two young men who currently attend Switzer Learning Center. Ryon, 18 years old, and Jesus, 13 years old, both created a list of their needs and wants, and of course their needs list was longer than their wants. We were able to collect enough donations from our members to get all items on their lists! In addition, with the donations collected each family will receive $170 to spend on groceries at Ralphs. Thank you all who donated! And, a special thank you to Lynne Neuman who helped with the shopping and wrapped for Ryon!
